Cogeco Interview

I was SO nervous this morning, as I had an interview scheduled with Cogeco – The Source.  I thought I was just going to do some fly-bys and aerobatics to go along with my interview on March 30th, but I was interviewed today as well.  I arrived at the airport around 9:00, as the Cogeco Producer was coming at 10:00.  I inspected my plane, called for fuel and taxied over to the main terminal building.  When I saw a blue car with “Cogeco” written all over it, I approached and said “I don’t suppose you’re from Cogeco?”  I’m glad the Producer’s first impression of me was that I’m a dork!  Anyway, he was so nice that my nerves settled down considerably once we made it over to my plane to set up.  Fortunately, Robyn from the MS Society – Niagara Peninsula Chapter of Hope also came along to help out with the interview.  She provided details about the Walk for MS in Niagara on April 17th.

I was glad to have the interview over with first, as it was what I was nervous about.  I was looking forward to the flying part!  Actually, once the interview started, I quite enjoyed it.  The Producer really put me at ease.  Robyn was interviewed after me, then some footage was taken of us checking out the plane.

After the interview, we all went up into the St. Catharines Flight Service Station tower.  They were so nice to give us permission to film my flight from the tower balcony.  I felt bad that the producer had to walk all the way up the tower stairs with his big, honkin’ camera and tripod.  After we chatted about the flight, I scampered back down the stairs and out to my plane.  I took off, did a circuit and flew past the tower, while dipping/waving my wings.  I then climbed to over 3000 feet and started my aerobatics.  I did a bunch of loops and rolls, and did a spin to lose some height before landing.

Once down, the Producer put away his huge-o camera and picked out a more dainty one (to fit in the plane).  We decided to fly around Niagara Falls.  The Producer took a video of my take-off, I then had a sudden and eerie feeling that I was being watched.  Utilizing my peripheral vision, I noticed the lens of his camera was about an inch or two from my face.  I asked him if I could help him and he said no.  When we got over the Falls, I noticed the lens seriously close to my face again.  I thought maybe he was trying to get a shot out of my side of the window.  I asked “Is my big head in your shot?” to which he replied “Your big head IS the shot!”  Tee Hee!  After doing the scenic circuit around the Falls, we made the short trip back to the airport.

The experience was amazing.  I was so impressed by the video – the Producer did an exceptional job.  WOW!  Seriously, check it out:  http://www.tvcogeco.com/niagara/gallery/the-source/3829-march-source-stories/36393-lizzy-mcfly

Thank you again to Cogeco and the producer for my clip today.  What a wonderful way to cover the Walk for MS and my cute little plane!

Today’s symptoms: I felt quite good this morning!  I had more energy than I’ve had in a while.  I knew it wouldn’t last after the excitement of the day, plus the flights.  I had to leave work about an hour early when the fatigue really hit hard.

Great Weekend!

There was a great estate auction at Chuck’s business on Saturday (Bailiff Auctions).  My mother met us in St. Catharines around 8:30 that morning.  We stopped at Timmy’s for a coffee then headed over for the auction, which didn’t actually start until 10:00.  Still, we got there early to get a good parking spot and good seats.  I viewed most of the items a couple days before, so I had an idea of what I wanted to bid on.  I’m glad we arrived early as it was a great turn out:

My pod neighbour at work has an iron peeing Scottie dog.  I was quite surprised to see one at the auction.  After about 30 minutes, the peeing dog was brought forward.  I decided I would only pay $20.00 at the most.  However, when the bidding climbed to $20, I really became determined to win.  As you can see, I did:

I think having lucky number 17 helped!

There was a bucket o’ stuff that I was also going to bid on.  It had a couple of wooded airplanes in the bottom.  The rest of the stuff had very little value to me – it wasn’t worth much either.  I said I would cap my bidding at $20.  However, me and a guy across the room go into a bit of a bidding war.  I was shocked when we got up to $40!  Regardless, I kept the battle going and when the guy seemed a little hesitant at $52.50, I decided to bail out.  Man, did he ever euchre himself!  It wasn’t worth anywhere near that.  Ah, revenge!  He bought the airplane lamp I really wanted a few items prior to the bucket…..  *sheepish grin*

Chuck got me an amazing airplane table and a really cute pedal airplane.  I’m going to use the pedal-plane for a photo shoot with the kitties.

I bought a couple of wooden things (I have no idea what they are!) for my friend.  She saw them in a picture I took of some items when I went a few days earlier.  Actually, I only noticed the one.  It came up toward the end of the auction, when they were really flying through the items.  I opened the bid at $5.00 then yelled “Sold for $5.00!”  Tee hee!  Actually, the auctioneer said it a second after me, so I did in fact win the item.  I thought I was seeing things when he held up an identical one a few items later.  When he asked for an opening bid, I yelled “Isn’t that a two for one!”  Everyone laughed and I received the second item.  Another thing I lucked out on was a treadmill for $10.00!

We all had a great time, despite being very pooped from the rather long day.

Today, I visited my mother in Fonthill.  I didn’t stay too long because I had to get my presentation ready for my Recreational Aircraft Association meeting tomorrow night.

I just thought I would remind you of how cute Mya and Abby are:

Today’s symptoms:  A little tired and weak from doing so much yesterday.  My jaw is hurting quite a bit, I had a headache and a slew of aches and pains in my arms and hands.

New Invention!

I’m a little nervous mentioning this on my blog, in fear that someone else will steal the idea and produce the product.  However, I’m willing to take my chances.  My mother has come up with an amazing home decor idea.  It’s a candle that lasts forever!  How could a candle last forever, you ask?  Well, my mother said that one of her Yankee candles burnt down to the bottom, but there was still some wax left.  I told her that I chop up the unused wax and put a chunk at a time in the new candle I’m burning.  That way, nothing gets wasted.  Well, I guess Jan didn’t hear the part about “A chunk at a time” because she decided to put ALL of the chunks into her new candle.  This, of course, created a candle, with wax up to the brim!  This is where the “lasts forever” comes into play.  If there is so much wax that the wick is nothing but a minuscule stub under a great wax abyss, it lasts forever because you CAN’T LIGHT IT!  Introducing *drum roll*……….the JANDLE!

Where’s the wick?  Oh, there it is!  That puny little black speck!

I have to give my mother ALL of the credit for this amazing invention.  All I did was name it!

Ok, enough of our get-rich invention – now onto my flight yesterday!  The weather was perfect so I took a couple hours of vacation and decided to work on my aerobatics.  I was a little nervous as I hadn’t done any aerobatic maneuvers in quite a few months, and I feared serious heckling from the St. Catharines tower.

I had to wait for another plane to be moved, so my plane could be pulled out of the hangar.  To kill some time, I chatted with the Flying Club cat.  When I started my pilot lessons, he was just a little kitten:

Since I hadn’t done aerobatics in awhile, I figured I would get nauseous after just a few loops and rolls.  I was shocked that I didn’t feel sick at all.  I made sure I flew fairly straight and level for one to three minutes between each maneuver, which seemed to do the trick.

I always find it amusing how wonky my horizon indicator goes, from the unusual attitudes and G forces of the aerobatics:

It typically stays like that until I’m taxiing the plane back to the hangar.  I also took a shot of how many G’s I did:

The plane’s structural limit is positive six G’s, so I was quite safe at less than five.

It was a great flight and I was so happy that I didn’t have any issues getting back into the swing of things.

When I got home, I ran to tell Pinky and Boo about my flight.  I asked if I could take their picture.  Boo agreed but Pinky just said “Hmph”

I was just about to ask Pinky to please look up at the camera, when I caught Boo giving her an unimpressive glance:

As you can see, it did the trick!

Today’s symptoms:  I was really drained physically and emotionally today.  This lead to a pretty bad headache starting early in the afternoon.  I’ve also had many sharp body aches, mostly in my arms and hands.

Pancakes in Waterloo

I had the day off today so Jan and I took advantage of the nice weather to go for a flight.  She hasn’t been up with me for many months, so it was nice to have her back in the saddle again.  We were planning on flying directly to the Kitchener/Waterloo airport, but had to take a slight detour when my oil access door opened – again!  I really need to get that fixed!  Fortunately, it happened when we were just across from the Grimsby airport.  I brought us down, taxied to the apron, shut down and closed the door.

It only took a few minutes from touch down before we were up again.  Jan snapped a couple of nice shots along the way:

I was shocked to hear how much traffic there was at the Kitchener/Waterloo airport.  I think I was number seven to land.  Once down, we taxied over to the Runways Cafe.

We were both a little hungry, so we split an order of pancakes and toast.  After visiting the pilot shop, we headed back out to little Vyctor for our flight home.  The traffic was a little lighter at that time, and we only had to wait for one plane to land before we took off.

Jan took a nice shot of the airport while we were taking off:

The clouds were rolling in a bit during the flight back to St. Catharines.  It was still quite smooth.

I do believe this is Ivor Wynne Stadium in Hamilton:

Soon after landing, the tower called me over the radio and asked if my co-pilot landed, since it was such a nice landing.  Ha ha!  Very funny!  Obviously my mother couldn’t land the plane, since despite sitting on four phone books, she still can’t see over the dash!  Geesh!  We decided to visit the tower folks after parking the plane.  I met the tower supervisor for the first time.  He said that he has been reading my blog.  He also mentioned that he can’t believe how cute and adorable my cats are!  He said they are the most attractive breed of cats he has ever seen.  He is even considering getting some himself!  Well, this is basically what I perceived him to say after he mentioned they were ugly!  Clearly, no one in their right mind would ever suggest that my kitties are anything less than perfect looking.  If I had actually believed that he said they were “ugly”, my heart would have shattered into about twenty-seven pieces.  No one would be that cruel to do that to me, so I must have just misheard him.

Today’s symptoms:  Feeling really good!  I had a nice amount of energy all day and I haven’t been hit with any aches or pains yet today.

My Big Reveal

Well, I finally got up the courage to let y’all know what I’ve been dealing with for the last few months and what my plans are for the near future.  You may recall back in November, I flew out to Vancouver, BC.  The reason I went there was to get an MRV (specialized MRI) to see if I had any issues with the veins in my neck.  For over a year now, the CCSVI (Chronic Cerebro-Spinal Venous Insufficiency) theory for Multiple Sclerosis has been at the forefront of health news all over the world.  Dr. Zamboni from Italy has done research and studies to show that people with MS have high incidences of stenosis, pinching and narrowing of the veins in the neck.  This means the blood does not drain properly from the brain.  This causes the veins to leak blood into surrounding tissues, which deposits iron in the central nervous system, which may cause immune reactions associated with MS.

I’ve been following this study since it began back in 2009.  I’ve done quite a bit of research on it and followed other similar studies done all over the world.  It is being shown that a balloon angioplasty procedure up through the affected veins is resulting in many MS sufferers to have relief from some/many of their symptoms.  One of the most consistent effects of the surgery is at least some relief of the fatigue that most MS folks endure.

Before heading to Vancouver for the MRV, I first had a doppler ultrasound done on my neck.  There were no significant findings from this test, but I still decided to have the more thorough MRV test, which was not covered by OHIP or my employer’s health care plan.  It made me nervous to think that I may spend $2000 on a test that may show I have the most perfect, wonderful veins anyone has ever seen.  This would mean, of course, that the angioplasty surgery would not help me with my symptoms.

It took a little over a month to get my MRV results.  I was thrilled to see that my veins weren’t normal.  Actually, one of the veins on the left was quite dainty and pathetic looking:

You can see how much larger the veins on the right (which are actually on the left side of the image) are than those on the left.  There is also a fairly large kink in my vein on the right:

So, after speaking with a few people who went to all different places in the world (Costa Rica, Rhode Island, Poland – since the procedure is not yet available to treat CCSVI in Canada) I decided to seriously consider having it done myself.  In addition to actually speaking with people, I have spent months reading blogs, personal websites and speaking with some people from the MS Society of Canada.  I really want to be sure that I am doing the best thing for my health.  There have not been too many negative effects from the surgery.  Most, if not all seem to be from problems with stents used to hold the vein open.  I will NOT get a stent, no matter what!  At least not until more research has been done on them for this treatment.

There are many clinics all over the world offering the CCSVI procedure.  I am very leery about traveling to certain countries to have it done.  Obviously I would give anything to have it done here in Canada, but since they’re not doing it here yet, my next choice is the States.  Fortunately, there are clinics in the US doing the procedure.  I have been in contact with one in Clearwater, Florida, and have decided to get the surgery done there.  Since I already have the results and images from the doppler ultrasound and MRV, I do not need to repeat the tests in Florida.  Chuck and I will be flying (commercially!) down to Orlando on April 1st.  We are driving over to Lakeland for the Sun N Fun aviation expo which has its final days on the 2nd and 3rd.  On the 4th, I have my consultation with the doctor in Clearwater, about an hour away.  I will then have the angioplasty procedure on the morning of April 5th.  I’m so excited!  The surgery will be totally worth it if it provides even a small amount of relief of my daily fatigue.  My fatigue, severe at times, has plagued me since I was eight years old.  I remember being at the mall with my mother and I would be so overwhelmed with fatigue and weakness, that I would have to lay down in the middle of the store aisle.  My mother just thought I was weird (which I was and still am), but neither of us knew the reason for this symptom.  It wasn’t until my MS diagnosis in 2005 when all of the pieces came together and I finally had a reason for all of the symptoms I had experienced since childhood.

There you have it, folks!  The cat (MEOW!) is out of the bag!  I will certainly keep you posted on how everything goes.  I will also be blogging while down in Florida, to keep everyone up to date.  Stay tuned!

Today’s symptoms:  Still a little weak today after my Tysabri IV infusion on Friday.  I’m sure it will be much better tomorrow.  Unfortunately, I have a killer headache tonight.

Forced Landing

The weather was absolutely perfect today so I took a few hours vacation and headed out to the airport.  I was hoping that it was going to be as good as they predicted earlier this week.  Yesterday, I planned my flight out to Waterloo Airport.  Chuck and I went there about a year ago and we ate at the restaurant, which overlooked the runways.  We had their goulash and it was amazing!  I decided I would fly there and bring back a few orders.  Fortunately, I thought to call them last night to double check that they still made it, and I was shocked that they said no!  I was told that they are under new ownership so there have been changes made to their menu.  I reluctantly put away my cooler bag and Tupperware.  I was speaking with a friend at work today and she said that she would like it if I could fly her out to London to visit her friend.  She still has to work out the logistics of everything, but I told her I would fly out that way today and time the flight.  I really didn’t need to since I knew it was around an hour to get there.  Still, it gave me a mission!  I decided to fly to St. Thomas, which is about the same distance and just south of London.  This was the first airport I landed at during my solo cross-country flight for my Private Pilot license.

It was a very smooth flight:

I was actually just going to fly around the airport and head back home, until I realized how much I needed to use the little Pilot’s room.  Needless to say, I entered the circuit to land:

I’m glad it wasn’t a huge airport and it didn’t take me too long to find the Flight Centre:

I ran into the building and asked the dispatcher if I could use their facilities.  I think my yellow eyes indicated my perilous situation.

I was there for less than ten minutes, before climbing into the saddle to head back home to St. Catharines.  They had some interesting aircraft there:

Mind you, none of them were as interesting or cute as this one:

It was a really nice flight.  I’m so glad I got out today since it looks like the weather is going to be poop-o-la for the next few days.

Today’s symptoms:  I felt quite good today (I certainly wouldn’t go flying if I didn’t!)  As usual, I’m totally drained after my flight, but it was well worth it.  My aches and pains aren’t as bad today as they’ve been the last couple of days.

Flat Food

Today was really flat, food-wise at least.  When Chuck got home, we had a chocolate marshmallow Easter egg fight.  One of the eggs ended up landing on top of the heater grill.  We weren’t able to find it until after dinner:

It took me about ten minutes to clean it out with around thirty Q-Tips.  It sure smells yummy in our apartment at least!

For dinner – thin crust pizza.  Yeah, pretty flat.

For dessert – I gave Chuck the gourmet cheery pie I bought him at the Dollarama:

We haven’t cracked the bad boy open yet.  I think I’ll pretend I’m not in the mood for dessert when we do.  Blech!

Today’s symptoms: I had a fair bit of energy today.  I’ve just had to deal with a slew of body aches – really sharp and quite painful in my shoulders, arms and hands.

Recovering Kitties

This past week was a little stressful as the new kitties were taken to the vet to be fixed.  At least they were able to go at the same time, so they can recover together.  I was able to pick them up on Friday.  I was led into the back where the recovering pets were, and shown Pinky and Boo snuggled together under a mound of blankets.  They were so cute!  It sure was nice to get them home:

I’m not sure what’s up with the expression on Boo’s face.  Looks like she’s smelling something stinky.  She’s very curious and decided to sniff my camera:

Abby and Mya were enjoying the sun the other day:

As you may have noticed in previous blog entries, Mya has a knack with her “evil eye” to scare away little Abby:

Maybe she just wanted Abby’s stinky little feet out of her face!

Looks like they’re calling for another “storm” in our area tonight.  The last time they did that, we got a few inches.  We have really turned into a bunch of weather-wussies around here!  As long as it’s not snowing in the morning when I have to head to work (I start at 7:15), I’ll be happy.  I try to walk whenever possible, to save gas and to not have to pay for parking.  The daily rate at the parking lot across the street from my office was $5.00.  It has now gone up to $8.00!  Ugh!  I’m going to need a pretty good reason not to walk to work any more.

Today’s symptoms: I had quite a bit of energy to start out, but crashed just before 16:00.  Now I’m achy and just feel lousy in general.  I’m kinda looking forward to going to sleep tonight.

Flight of Jealousy

The skies were perfectly clear today.  I watched about four small planes fly past my window at work.  It was around the third or forth plane that little tears started trickling down my cheek.  In the spur of the moment, I phoned the airport to ask them to plug in my plane, I emailed my supervisor that I was taking a couple hours vacation, then out of the office I flew!

I had no idea where I was going to fly, so I started out along the Lake Ontario shoreline, over to Niagara-On-The-Lake.  I then climbed to 3600′ and entered the Niagara Falls scenic circuit.  Here’s a shot of Great Wolf Lodge:

Then toward the Falls:

The Rainbow Bridge…not too much traffic:

I didn’t see the rainbow while I was taking this picture (you know, since I also had to concentrate on flying the plane):

I was going to head toward Fort Erie but decided to go back out to Long Point.  The temperatures have been fairly mild the last couple of days, so I wanted to see if there were any ice fishing-dudes still out there.  On the way, I passed a flock of geese:

You can see Long Point along the top of this next pic.  I love the reflection:

To my surprise, since I could see how thin the ice was along certain parts of the shoreline, there were still quite a few fisher-folks out there:

The pollution over Hamilton was really noticeable heading back home:

And last but not least, the next picture in the new St. Catharines hospital updates:

Needless to say, it turned out to be a great day!  I’m taking tomorrow off as vacation.  I have to bring the new kitties over to the animal hospital in the morning to be fixed.  I can’t wait to get the call saying they made it through the procedure.  In the meantime, Jan will be coming here and were going to do a little shopping then head over to the chiropractor to get cracked and popped.

Today’s symptoms:  I had quite a bit of energy today.  I’m now dealing with a fairly bad headache and some body aches, but it WILL be better tomorrow – gosh darn-it!

Big Head Guy

I’m happy to report that I had more energy than I did over the last five days combined!  I made good use of it as Chuck and I decided to go over to the Walden Galleria in Buffalo.  I really wanted to hit the Apple store so I could buy a camera adapter for my iPad.  Now when I travel, I can upload pics from my camera directly onto my iPad, then do a blog.  I have a HUGE trip planned to Florida in April, so this will come in handy.  Stay tuned for a blog post in the very near future for my “big disclosure” which involves the flight down to Florida.  Fortunately, I found the camera adapter, so I’m all set there.  I wasn’t really in a clothes shopping mood, so we did none of that (except for some shirts for Chuckles).  After the mall, we purchased a few items in Tops then headed back to Canada.  I asked Chuck if we could stop at the pet store in Niagara Falls, Ontario so that I could look for some “At Ease” spray for Abby’s floor-pooping-problem.  For some reason, I thought the orange gummy bear laying in the parking lot right outside my door, was a sign of luck and good fortune (especially since he was the same colour as my airplane):

Soon after we left the store, Chuck mentioned that he was hungry.  How convenient for there to be a Mandarin in the mall.  Wasn’t I just there last weekend?  Hmmmm….you can never visit the Mandarin too frequently.

Chuck decided to take a picture of me while waiting to be seated.  I really hate having my picture taken:

It was clearly evident how many illiterate people there are around here, as per the next two pictures:

Duh!

I hit the salad bar while Chuck went for the real food, which included a big, yucky crab leg:

It the Chinese New Year, and we were lucky enough (it must have been the gummy bear!) to be witness to their celebrations, which included two huge dragons and some really neat percussionists.  There were two people holding up poles with lettuce hanging off of them.  The dragons would come by and bite the lettuce off the poles.  I guess they were hungry.  I think they could have given them something more exciting than lettuce – like a cheesecake:

Nom nom nom…..

What a wonderful day!  I’m pooped now though.  Hopefully I will sleep tonight as cute and peacefully as little Abby:

Today’s symptoms:  Much more energy that over the past week.  I have a fairly bad headache this evening and I’m having lot of pain in my neck.  The neck things has been going on for months now, so I think I should see my doctor about it.

Snarly Mya

The saga of introducing and integrating the four kitties.  It’s going fairly well with little Pinky.  There are a few growls here and there, but nothing aggressive at all:

Boo is still being a little growly when she comes over, but it gets better each day.

Speaking of being not-so-nice, check out this little interaction between Mya and Abby.  The spent a few minutes together playing with this catnip filled rainbow:

Then Mya turned into a hideous, snarly, evil, raging, mean, malicious little snippet:

Look at cute little Abby, cowering in fear!  Mya can be the biggest sweetheart you’ll ever meet, but she sure has a bully side to her!

I wish I had more to share this week, but it hasn’t been a good few days symptom-wise.  My fatigue has been really bad, leading to complete exhaustion and full-body weakness.  It’s been rather unpleasant.  Usually it hits me for a day or two, but it started Sunday afternoon and it’s still going today, which is Thursday.  Hopefully tomorrow will be better.  I don’t want to play this game anymore!

Today’s symptoms:  Yuck, blah, argh, whimper, ugh.

Delivery!

I was all excited to take a couple hours of vacation time today to enjoy the “perfect” weather that was predicted.  Although very cold this morning, the sky was perfectly clear (as forecasted).  I was shocked when that all changed around 9:30.  A blanket of low, gray clouds moved in and the wind picked up.  I was so bummed.  I called Flight Service in London to get a weather briefing, and it sure wasn’t sounding like things were going to improve.  I decided I wouldn’t totally give up at that time and called back around 1:00.  To my delight, the weather was clear in South Niagara and heading North.  After hanging up, I giggled like a little school-girl and frolicked around the office.

When I got to the airport, the Chief Instructor was speaking to one of the Aviation Mechanics, whom I knew.  The mechanic asked me if I was flying to Brantford (in a joking tone).  I said I didn’t plan on it but since I had no planned destination, I could head out that way.  He said he had to pick up some glue at Aircraft Spruce .  I had to tell him a few times that I would fly out there and pick it up for him – he eventually believed me.  He said he would call the store to pay over the phone and have them get the order ready for me.  I accepted my mission and headed out.

It was a little windy, but not too bad at around 2000 feet.  I got clearance from Hamilton to fly right over their airport.  Shortly after, I arrived at Brantford.  The winds were evident from the snow blowing across the runway:

I had a decent landing and made my way over to the apron closest to the Aircraft Spruce store.  As soon as I stepped out of the plane, I realized how badly I needed to use the little pilot’s room.  I also soon realized how far away the Flying Club (with washroom) was from my plane.  Of course, I was walking/running into the wind.  Fortunately, I made it in time and greeted the dispatchers on my way out of the Flying Club.  I told them that I flew all the way there just to use their facilities.  She seemed a little shocked, so I had to mention that I was kidding.  Anyway, the walk back toward my plane was much easier with the wind at my back.  I snapped a shot of Vyctor before walking over to the store:

I picked up the glue and promised the clerks that I wouldn’t sniff it during the flight home.  Back to the plane before my engine cooled down – he started up well.  Here’s a shot of Brantford Airport during take-off:

The flight back was nice.  I decided to fly south of Hamilton rather than through it this time.  I passed what I assume is a vehicle scrap yard:

I could clearly see the yucky weather to the North of the Lake Ontario shoreline:

I arrived home less than forty-five minutes after leaving Brantford.  I had the glue as my co-pilot during the flight.  It was a glue-sniffing-free flight, you’ll be happy to know:

I was totally wiped out once I got home – well worth it though!  Fortunately, I never feel tired until after the flight.

Tomorrow, I’m driving to Burlington to meet up with an Army buddy at the Mandarin .  We usually meet there once a year to keep in touch and enjoy some great food.

***  Wow!  I was just scared to death.  I had the sound turned up quite high on my laptop and when I Googled the Mandarin to include the link, their theme song played, causing me to fly about two feet off of my bed!

Today’s symptoms:  Felt really good, especially after finding out I was going for a flight.  My fatigue is quite bad this evening and I’m also experiencing a lot of jaw pain.  Tomorrow will be better!

Nippy Flight

I’m so glad the weather stayed nice enough today for me to take off from work early and go for a flight.  I left work around 12:30 and was off the ground within an hour.  I was quite glad to have my heated vest on, since it was bitter out.  It’s through Gerbing – they have everything from heated jackets to pants to gloves, etc.  Despite my mechanic fixing my little heat issue with my plane, it’s obviously still a bit cold in the freezing temps like today.  I was kicking myself for not bringing my extra pants – my legs were freezing. Oh well.

I headed out to the southwest, toward Dunnville.  I eventually made it over to Turkey Point. Then I noticed a bunch of dark specks out on the ice near Long Point.  I made my way over and was quite surprised to see well over a hundred ice-fishing-shack-thingies.

There was a cute little home just off the shoreline:

I flew over to Long Point and despite the name, I was shocked over how long it was!

When I headed back, I saw where you could rent a fishing hut/shack thing:

I flew over Port Dover on the way back.  I love the zoom lens on my camera:

Here are a couple shots of the factory in Nanticoke – they look like they are from totally different times of the day, but I took them just minutes apart:

As I flew south of Hamilton, I could see the snow was a’coming.  There was a white wall along the Lake Ontario shoreline.  Thus, I was quite happy to be heading home:

It looks like a big storm is on its way toward Niagara, so no more flights for moi for a few days.  At least I had an amazing two hours today.

Today’s symptoms:  Much more energy that I had this weekend.  My headache was gone as well.

Plethora of Kitties

We’ve been trying to get the new kitties integrated with Mya and Abby.  Right now, Pinky is in her carrier with Mya sitting a foot away, staring.  So far, only a few growls and hisses, but no other signs of aggression.  I visited their previous mother today.  She gave me some treats for all of the girls.  For some reason, Sphynx cats don’t seem into catnip.  Not surprisingly, crazy little Abby is an exception to the rule.  I think one of the toys she gave us has catnip in it.  Here is a few pictures of Abby and her new friend, Homer:

Mya is clearly amused in this picture:

Put your little tongue away, Abby:

Things went quite well.  Mya sat there for a few more minutes, then got bored and walked away.

Abby is back to drooling over poor little Homer, who is now very soggy!

The weather might be decent enough for a flight tomorrow.  I’m hoping so since I haven’t flown in a few weeks.  I have about 35 hours of vacation leave to use up (we can only carry over a certain amount) so bring on the clear skies!

Today’s symptoms:  A little bit weak today and a fairly bad headache, but a pleasant day anyway!

I’m Normal!!!

I had a pretty good day today!  I found out that we will be doing our Marcel Dionne and Walk for MS event again this year!  I am SO excited and yet again, extremely appreciative of Marcel!  It looks like it may be on April 14th at Marcel’s store at 4424 Montrose Road, Niagara Falls.  It was a blast last year.  I am still in shock over Marcel’s store – it’s HUGE!  I will keep everyone up to date of the event on my website and in my blogs.  The Walk for MS is on April 17th this year.  Hopefully the weather will be good enough for me to fly over all three Niagara Walk sites, as I did for the last three years.  Hey, it beats walking!  Tee Hee!  Needless to say, finding out this news about Marcel put me in an amazing mood today.  This was not what I was expecting as I had my first Tysabri IV infusion today.  I was a little nervous and also not looking forward to the drive to Burlington, which is where I had it done.  Tysabri is a drug used to prevent MS flare-ups from being as frequent and severe.  It also may help to shrink the big ol’ lesion dudes on my brain.

My mother came to my office for around 11:45 today.  She picked me up and we drove over to the apartment to change vehicles.  Why would we want to drive to Burlington in a Mercedes when we could drive in a Toyota Corolla!  Hello!  The drive was only about 45 minutes.  Mind you, we had to sit in the parking lot for about five minutes while I phoned the Tysabri care-worker folks.  I could not find the unit for the infusion clinic.  She said we had the right address.  I told her my GPS was showing the address at the middle of the intersection just diagonal to the building we were at.  I figured the middle of the road in the cold wasn’t going to be conducive to our health and safety, so I figured the GPS may have been off a little.  I went into one of the units in the building and she said she didn’t know what we were talking about.  We left all dejected and decided to walk down a few more doors.  There was a small sign on one of the doors that said “Unit 4″, so we wandered on in.  Another couple was there at the same time.  We were greeted by a nurse at the door, who was kind enough to allow us in out of the cold.  The clinic was really nice inside!  The other woman before us was hooked up to her IV, as she had a 1:00 appointment and our wasn’t until 1:30.  I tried to convince the nurse that it was my mother who was getting the IV, but she didn’t buy it.  I hunkered down in the comfy chair while she hooked me up.  It was one of the best IV’s I’ve ever had!  Piece of cake!  Speaking of which, I requested a piece of cake during my infusion (it was clearly listed on my chart, but unfortunately, the nurse missed it.)  No cake for me!  Anyway, my little mother and I snacked on some Cadbury mini eggs during the drive there, so I had my chocolate fix.  Here’s a pic of me in the chair:

Yes, I look like a total dork with my bra strap hanging out and my massive boots on my spindly legs.  Oh well!  The infusion lasted an hour and was no problem at all.  I offered to partake in a study, which consisted of a short survey.  My answers looked as dorky as I did, as I completed the survey with my left hand.  I was a little shocked at one question, which asked if I had any problems getting and/or maintaining my erections.  Fortunately, I realized that section said “for males” and the “female” section was below.  I breathed a sigh of relief as I skipped the rest of the section.

Jan and I were able to watch TV while we waited an hour to leave after the infusion (to make sure I didn’t spontaneously combust from any allergic reactions to the medication).  The nurse there was SO nice and made the entire process most quite enjoyable!  She actually told me I was “normal” at one point, but I’m pretty sure she was just referring to my veins, and not me as a person.  I was a complete, talkative whack-o during the whole two hours, so surely she didn’t mean I was personally normal.  I really hope she’s my nurse for my infusion next month too.  At least I kept her amused!

Today’s symptoms:  I really didn’t start to get tired until after we got home.  I still have a bit of a headache, which started earlier this morning.  Other than that, it’s been a decent day symptom-wise.

Spooky Sink

Everyone will be thrilled to know that my tattoo has almost completely healed.  It didn’t even take a full week.  My mother hates it.  I make sure that whenever I’m around her, I “accidentally” lift my shirt at the back and bend over so she can admire it – you’re welcome, Jan!  Tee hee!

I wasn’t able to fly this weekend due to the poop-o-la weather.  Looks like it’s going to be that way for the rest of the week.  Regardless, I still had a great weekend.  I got tons of administrative stuff done for the Recreational Aircraft Association.  I also started a bit of “Spring cleaning” around the apartments.  My mother came over today and we went to the Fairview Mall, then to Costco.  I finally replaced my wireless mouse with a more modern version.  I think when I got my first one, it’s when they first entered the market.  Sure, the mouse itself was nice, but the antenna thing was larger than the mouse and was attached to a two foot long cord!   I feel so special with my new one.  I also picked up a pack of CD jewel cases.  Get this, you can get a pack of 30 for $10.99 or a pack of 50 for $25.99.  Let’s see, I can get 60 for less than 50 – they really did a great job pricing those bad boys out!  Anyway, I also replenished my clumping cat litter supply at Costco.  I bought two huge boxes, which were so big and heavy, we drove home with only my back wheels touching the ground.  I guess I shouldn’t have put the litter in the trunk.

Little Mya almost scared me to death a couple nights ago.  I walked into the washroom to pi-diddle, when I noticed something out of place in the sink (just as I reached to turn on the light):

She was just sitting there like a little furless dork.  Afterwords, I had to wash my hands in the bathtub, because she was a little reluctant to move.  Weird.

Today’s symptoms:  Nothing much to report!  I was a little drained after our shopping trip, but not too much else!

Exorcism

What a joyous weekend.  Actually, it started when I took some vacation leave on Friday to go for a flight.  The skies were quite clear:

I was shocked to see Pac-Man during my travels.  I had no idea he was in the Niagara Region:

I wasn’t able to fly this weekend, as the weather was yuck-o.  However, I did see my plane….sort of.  I got a tattoo of a maple leaf when I was 18 and in the Army.  I’ve always wanted another one, and Saturday afternoon, I got it!  I decided to get one of my plane.  Here’s a shot of me getting it done:

I must say, the outline was VERY painful.  I don’t remember my first one being that bad.  Mind you, it was much smaller than the one I got yesterday.  Fortunately, once he started doing the shading, the pain was far less.  More discomfort than anything.  It took a little over two hours.  I am so happy with the result!  It spans most of my lower back:

I visited my mother today.  We just went out for a coffee then headed over to the Seaway Mall.  After I got home, I went into the other apartment to visit the new kitties.  Boo is really weird – most cats would just crawl under the pillow case or a blanket.  This cat crawls under the whole pillow:

I told her she was weird.  She crawled out from under the pillow and began what I assume was an exorcism.  It went a little something like this:

Her sister wandered around the apartment while the evil spirits escaped:

Mya and Abby had no idea what I was dealing with in the other apartment.  For this, I am thankful:

Today’s symptoms:  Had decent energy today and no major complaints (other than a sore lower back!) with any other symptoms.

New Additions

I am very happy to say that we have two new additions to our family.  A girl I met a few years ago was looking into adopting Sphynx kitties.  It turns out she was allergic to them, and the allergies grew worse over the last couple years.  I ran into her again about a week ago.  She told me about her allergies and said she was considering giving her two Sphynx cats up for adoption.  I felt so bad that she had to even consider this.  I told her I would certainly take them into my home if she needed to let them go.  I received an email from her the next day asking if I was still willing to take on two more Sphynx kitties.  I told her I certainly would, and noted that they would be cherished as much as my other naked girls.  She sent me a picture which I admired multiple times a day for the last week.  We made arrangements to have the girls dropped off at my apartment last night.  I even asked my Team Leader for the day off today, so I could spend more time with them.  I asked him if I could take it as either adoption leave or family related, but he didn’t go for it.  I guess he remembered the time that I tried to put my car’s windshield replacement through our drug plan, under eyeglasses.

Anyway, the little angels have arrived and they are absolutely adorable!  They are currently in our other apartment across the hall, in order to have a slow and less traumatic integration into their new home with their new siblings.  I did lock Mya and Abby in the bedroom today while I brought the other kitties over to explore their new digs.

They wandered around for a bit, then I took them back to the other apartment.  I decided to bring them over again a couple hours later.  This time they both hid under the couch.  Almost two hours later, I decided I better let Mya and Abby out of the bedroom in case they had to go to the bathroom or eat.  They both knew something was up.  Mya soon spotted the two visitors under the couch:

Abby, on the other hand, just sat on top of the cable box, being her typical, googly self:

I had to eventually put Mya and Abby back in the bedroom while I lifted the couch to remove the other kids.  Back to the other apartment they went – that was enough excitement for one day!  They are just resting now.  I’ll go visit them every commercial or so….

I may take more vacation time tomorrow to be with my new girls.  I may try a more “formal” introduction to the other kitties tomorrow.

Today’s symptoms:  Feeling pretty good.  I had more energy today than I’ve had in a few weeks, but I’m still experiencing frequent body aches and pains.  I started exercising again last night.  I did 30 minutes on my recumbent bike yesterday and 60 today – yea!

Relaxing Weekend

I woke up Saturday morning to find my two little kitties bug hunting.  I don’t think they ever caught it – and quite frankly, I don’t think they even tried.  But they were both staring for over five minutes:

“Where’s the bug, Abby?”

I wasn’t able to go flying this weekend as little Vyctor is having his annual inspection done.  I did have to visit him Saturday morning to drop off his log books for my mechanic.  It was sad to see Vyctor so exposed.  He must have felt so vulnerable:

He was way at the back of the hangar, so it was like going through a plane maze to get to him.  Hopefully the inspection will go smoothly, with no major repairs to be made.  Blah!

I wish I had something grand to share with everyone, but it was kinda an uneventful weekend!

Today’s symptoms:  Had decent energy, but had those darn body aches and pains all over the place, starting from the time I woke up!  Geesh!

Back In The Sky

I had an appointment with my neurologist at the McMaster MS Clinic yesterday.  My mother joined me and we headed out to Hamilton around 1:45.  Nothing exciting happened on the drive to the hospital, until we actually got there.  We drove down the ramp into the parking garage, and waited for the van in front of us to take his ticket.  He stopped so far away from the machine that he had to open his door and partially step out to reach it.  It took a few attempts, but he finally got it.  Hello!  We would like to get inside and park sometime today!  Well, it didn’t end there.  He just got through the gate when he stopped again.  At this point, I had already pulled up (within arms length of the machine – duh!) and took my ticket.  I started to pull through, thinking this guy is going to keep going, but he didn’t.  I had to stop and thought the mechanical arm was going to come down on my trunk!  The arm came down within inches of my car.  He still sat there and a string of cars were behind me at that point.  I had no where to go as I was inches from him and the gate arm.  He got out of his van and looked up at the top of his vehicle.  It was then that I realized the rack on his roof had actually hit the pipes on the ceiling.  Duh again!  He hit the first one and the next one was a few feet ahead.  They were through the entire parking garage.  We sat there for a few minutes while he scratched his head and looked at the pipes.  I was getting really annoyed, as I’m sure the people behind me were, so Jan got out and checked the space behind me.  I had just enough room to make a 27 point turn (tee hee!) and head down the next aisle.  Ugh!  Fortunately, we found a perfect spot in the area of the MS clinic.  Despite the fiasco, we were still quite early for my appointment.  We had a coffee and perused the gift shop.  After checking in upstairs at the clinic, I was taken in within minutes of arriving.  My appointment was over in about 20 minutes.  Since Jan and I were meeting up with my friend for 5:00, we decided to head down to the blood lab to get the blood work done that I needed for the new med I’m going on.  We were the only ones there so I was called in before we even sat down.  After that, Jan and I just killed some time in the Fortinos grocery store outside of the restaurant, before meeting my friend.  It was such a nice visit.  We speak via email every day but haven’t actually seen each other in about two years.

I decided to take the day off today and yet again enjoy the nice weather.  After my friend stopped by for lunch, I headed out to the airport.  I took off around 2:30 and flew around Niagara for about an hour.

It was a little dull out, but still a nice flight.  This time I was able to fly out to the Lake Erie shoreline to the South.

I snapped a picture of the big line up on the Fort Erie Peace Bridge:

I also took a picture of a cute little lone tree.  Why, you ask?  I don’t know:

I have tomorrow off as well, but I don’t think the weather is going to be decent enough for another flight.

Today’s symptoms:  I actually felt pretty good today!  I was totally wiped out yesterday so I was surprised that I had as much energy as I did today.  I’m pooped now, but I always am after a flight.
