Back to Edenvale

Had another great weekend.  I flew Mike and I up to Edenvale, where I just was a few weeks earlier to give a presentation.  It took a little over an hour to get there – we left around 9:00.  It was their annual Gathering of the Classics.  I’ve been once before.

I was number seven in the circuit to land.  There are always tons of planes flying into this event.  Number six in front of me was a Harvard:

Here it is after we touched down:

The event started at 10:00 but there were already tons of folks there:

We wandered around and checked out the other aircraft, including the B25 Mitchell:

Then we checked out the classic cars.  Of course, I had to match up the tattoo of my plane with this nice orange car:

A helicopter was flying around, giving rides.  Almost looked like it was landing on the Harvard in this shot:

I couldn’t believe that we stayed there for about three hours.  Heading back to the plane, we noticed folks walking by, checking out Vyctor.  We wrote out the specifics of the plane on a poster that hung off the prop.  Kinda neat to see where everyone was from and a little background on the planes:

Before starting up the plane, we got a marshaller to guide us out to the runway:

Kinda neat to see the Mitchell taxi by!

Of course, I did the queen wave as we taxied by all of the on-lookers.  Once out to the runway, we had a few planes in front of us to wait to take off.  When it was my turn, the view we left behind of the event was awesome:

What a great day!  Tiring, but totally worth it.

I’m going to have to continue this blog tomorrow, as I have more to share about the weekend.  Stay tuned as the saga continues!

Today’s symptoms: Not too bad today – just a not so pleasant headache and the fatigue hit around noonish.  Made it through the work day though.

Over The Falls

We took advantage of the great weather this weekend and went for a flight on Saturday.  Mike and I drove out to the airport early afternoon and took to the skies.  Our first “stop” was over Niagara Falls.  I never get sick of of seeing it:

As it was a holiday weekend, the bridge traffic to and from the States was insane:

So glad we weren’t a part of it!

After a few circuits over the Falls, I took Mike to one of my favourite places to fly – over the Lake Erie shoreline.  Lots of folks out on the beaches and cruising around on jet skies and boats:

I think this is in a blog from a year or two ago – Mike got a better picture of it than I did:

Not sure if it’s a floating trampoline or what!

I think this waterpark was close to or in Sherkston:

After flying over the shoreline, we headed back to St. Catharines:

We were starting to get a tad hungry so decided to head out for noms after landing:

Fortunately the weather the following day was also great.  I took up someone for aerobatics last November and he really wanted to go again.  We met at the airport just before 10:00.  Mike came along too so he could watch the show and take some video of my maneuvers.  Before taking off, I set my Go Pro camera to get video of the flight:

We did some aerobatics over the airport, then headed over for a quick tour of Niagara Falls.  It was a really nice flight.  My passenger is quite a trooper and already looking forward to our next flight!

I have yet another aerobatic flight planned during my day off on Thursday.  I took up a friend of my brother’s a few months ago.  A friend of his saw pics and video of Kevin’s flight and left a comment on his Facebook.  I responded by offering him the same experience Kevin had.  Hope he enjoys it as much as his friend did!

Today’s symptoms: My energy level was average today.  I did need to take something in the afternoon to help me get through the rest of the day.  Unfortunately, for the last few hours I’ve been dealing with one of the worst non-sinus related headaches I’ve had in long time.  Kinda looking forward to taking something to take the edge off before I go to bed tonight.

Good End to the Week

My awesome week last week continued.  I took Thursday off and Jan and I went to Walden Galleria in Buffalo.  On the way to Timmies for a coffee, we passed the biggest bags of popcorn I’ve ever seen:

As tempted as we were to buy one, we decided against it.  After visiting Tim Hortons, we headed to a slew of stores.  Jan browsed one of her favourite stores while I took a pic of this sign:

So I guess I can no longer make fun of Jan’s “size.”  I’ll now have to switch over to making fun of her “Proportion.”

We had a very successful shopping session!

That evening, I drove over to my friend’s house and we then headed to the Niagara Passions event I won tickets for from 105.7 EZ Rock.  We arrived soon after it started at 6:30.  There were already a ton of people there.  We grabbed some wine and noms from a few vendors and sat down:

Everything was great.  We met up with someone from work, who told us which other vendors we needed to visit – essentially all of them:

The restaurants at the venue were all amazing – I don’t think there is one I wouldn’t go to after trying their food.

I met up with one of our Recreational Aircraft Association folks, who is the Town Crier for Port Colborne:

Nice of him to let me wear his hat!

I also ran into a huge coffee bean, which many people thought was a naked M&M:

We wandered around for a couple hours, then headed out.  At the exit, there was some beaded items for sale.  Laura bought a really neat ring and I found this awesome key chain that looks just like the pitot static cover I use on my plane:

Since I’ve got it home, I can’t find it.  One of my kittahs must have hid it.

I haven’t been feeling too well this week and actually went home about three and a half hours early today.  After a long nap, I got up and gave three of my four kitties a bath.  My friend, her god daughter, her son and his girlfriend are coming over tomorrow to meet them.  As usual, little Mya didn’t need to be cleaned (she’s so posh!).  I didn’t get a pic of Pinky, who was first, but here’s number two – little Boo:

And clean little Abby:

Don’t they look ever so amused!

The weather isn’t looking good at all for the next two days.  This really sucks because I have two aerobatic flights planned.  Paws crossed the forecasters are wrong (as they often are!)

Today’s symptoms: Felt really weak and fatigued.  Tons of pain all over.  I tried to last at work as long as I could, but soon after 1:00, I wasn’t even functional anymore.  Tomorrow will be much better, which I’m really looking forward to.

Very Busy Week

I can’t believe how busy this week has been – totally awesome though.  On Monday, Mike and I went on a ghost tour around downtown St. Catharines.  Kinda neat to hear about some of the buildings I see almost every day, knowing that spooks may be looming about!  Our tour guide was really great – he showed up in a hearse.  His name was Wayne:

We started and ended the tour (which was almost two hours long) at market square.  Really cool to hear all of the history and potential hauntings around the area.  For the most part, Mike and I were pretty serious and mature, although we did need to take a break for a few seconds:

Besides learning about old buildings within the block of my office, one of the last stops was at the 105.7 EZ Rock building.  I have done a few interviews with them and 97.7, and was also just there to pick up the tickets I won….stay tuned for details:

The tour was finished around 11:00.  Lucky for us, it was less than a 10 minute walk home.  The tour was really neat and I would totally recommend it.

The next day I left work around noon and headed to the airport.  It was the annual MS golf tournament at the Whisky Run Golf Course in Port Colborne.  I do some aerobatics and a fly over each year.  The clouds cleared literally within fifteen minutes of the tournament starting:

I think this is the car that would go to someone who got a hole in one at this particular hole.  A couple friends from work are volunteering to watch for a winner:

After my fly-over, I headed back home.  Mike came over after work and we drove out to Whisky Run to enjoy an amazing steak dinner:

My awesome week continued on Wednesday.  Back to the airport I went and headed out at 9:00 for Edenvale.  I was asked by a member of the 99’s (women aviation group) to give a presentation at their high tea fly/drive in.  Edenvale is up near Collingwood, just south of Georgian Bay.  It took me about an hour and a half to get there.  Looking down at the traffic, I was so glad I didn’t have to drive:

I flew through Toronto at around 1700′, truly admiring the awesome view.  Further up north, I passed Canadian Forces Base Borden, which I had spent many weekends and a summer, when I served in the Army Reserve:

Rather neat to see it from that perspective.

Not long after, I arrived at Edenvale Airport:

The Tiger Moth was taking off on the grass strip as I was coming in overhead the field.  I actually said over the radio that he looked really cute from up here:

I came in to land then had to taxi to an open hangar, shut down my plane and ask some folks where I was supposed to go!  Turns out I was on the wrong side of the apron so had to fire Vyctor back up and head over to the right hangar.

I arrived just a tad early, but that was actually kinda good.  It gave me time to set up my laptop, projector and speakers.  I also helped set up the tables and chairs.  People soon started coming in – some drove and some flew:

It was a good turn out of folks – I think they enjoyed the presentation.  As it was high tea plus we were celebrating Amelia Earhart’s birthday, some pretty sassy hats and summer outfits were worn:

Here was Amelia’s birthday cake:

It was an awesome time and I really enjoyed speaking to and with everyone.  Sometime I would love to attend again!

Heading back home, I had a tail wind and the trip was only a little over an hour.

Passing through Toronto:

Visibility was great, although it was rather bumpy (which I enjoy!)

Needless to say, I was completely drained when I got home, but it was worth it.  I relaxed the rest of the day and was still able to get up bright and early to start work at 7:15.  I had to leave work early today to get my Tysabri infusion.  I was happy that it only took one poke with the IV needle!  After my infusion was done (an hour), I headed back to my apartment and picked up a friend who also lives there.  We then drove to Niagara Falls and went to an amazing restaurant, Bravo Grill.  We met up with a couple other friends from work, one who retired about five years ago.  We all had great noms.  I had carrot soup and salad:

I would certainly go back there.

I have more great food to look forward to tomorrow.  As I mentioned at the beginning of this post, I won two tickets from 105.7 EZ R

ock.  They are to the Passion of Hope event in Niagara-On-The-Lake tomorrow night.  The tickets are $75 each, so it was a nice win!  My friend Laura and I are going.  There are about fourteen restaurants and the same number of wineries participating.  We get to sample food and drink for all of them.  Also, Tanya Memme and Charlie Frattini of Sell This House on A&E will be there.  Going to be fun!

Today’s symptoms: Felt rather weary this morning, not surprising considering everything I’ve done this week.  This Tysabri has hit me harder than the last few.  I have tons of crushing pains all over my body.  Quite a bad headache too.  I’m sure it will be somewhat better after a sleep!

Pearson Airport

Had an amazing experience yesterday.  A friend from work has a cousin who works as a controller at Pearson Airport.  We drove up to the airport for around 7:00pm.

We met up with her cousin and we started our amazing tour, first of the terminal.

Seeing all the screens was amazing – hard to compute the enormous amount of information.

As I usually do, I made fudge for the tower folks:

I was happy to see it didn’t last very long!

After chatting with the amazing folks in the terminal, we were taken over to the tower:

Before going upstairs, we took a piddle break.  The view from the bathroom was amazing:

Each bathroom was for one person only.  Since two of us REALLY needed to go, I decided to discretely go in the mens:

When I walked out, a guy gave me a rather strange look, as he walked in.  Oops!

Needless to say, the view from the tower was awesome:

It was so great to chat with the controllers – what a great group.  They too got a batch of fudge.  I believe I mentioned a few times on the way down “LYZ – clear me through the zone!”  I guess we’ll find out if it worked out or not the next time I fly through Toronto.

We were also given a tour of the gym downstairs:

Then it was back to the terminal.  Here’s my photobomb:

Absolute blast.  We are so appreciative of the time taken to give us the amazing tour.  Thank you!!!

Today’s symptoms:  Needless to say, my fatigue level was quite high after all of the excitement yesterday.  Totally worth it though!  Had tons of MS-related pains in my arms, plus the MS hug hit a few times too.  I’m pretty sure tomorrow will be much better, after a good sleep.

Joyous Monday

For most of the summer, the weekends have seemed to go by rather slowly (which, of course is great!)  This past weekend went by fairly quickly though.  How did it get to be Monday already?

Last Thursday I was off on compressed.  The weather was decent so I decided to go for a flight.  Still trying to teach myself a barrel roll.  I’m really not sure if I’m doing it right – it just seems too easy so I think I’m missing something.  I even radioed the tower and asked them to compare my loop to my attempt at a barrel roll.  He replied they both look crazy!  Perhaps I can go up again this week and try it in front of another set of eyes.  Regardless, I had an amazing flight.  I did aerobatics for over 45 minutes.  Eventually, my stomach started to hint that it had enough so I left the area of the airport and headed toward the south.  I flew along the Lake Erie shoreline and passed by all of the beach goers and boaters:

I had quite a few people wave at me, so of course I tipped my wings back at them.  It was great fun.  After, I headed over to my aviation mechanic’s place (he has his own grass strip).  I just wanted him to look at something minor.  I was greeted by one of his dogs once I landed:

We checked out my plane and chatted for a bit.  Then it was time to head back to the airport:

Perfect day for a nice long flight.

Later that night, Abby decided to  show me her high beams:

Mike, his mother, my mother and I all decided to go out for dinner again.  We had a typical great meal at Kelsey’s – one of my favourite restaurants.  Once back home, we noticed this convenient little table in the elevator.  How nice:

Perhaps there will be a sofa and/or mini fridge next.

Back in my apartment, I opened the balcony door to let the kittahs enjoy what was left of the sun.  Does the weirdness ever cease around here?

Friday was quite fun – they had a back bacon night at the St. Catharines Flying Club.  The food was so good.  As usual, so was the company.  Here I am with my good friend and boyfriend.  Stereo Mikes:

This weekend I was having some issues with my iPhone, so I brought it into Future Shop to have them look at it.  They brought up my warranty information on their system.  It showed that there was an issue.  I ended up having to phone the insurance company (third party, not actually Future Shop).  The call didn’t go all that well.  The next day I phoned Future Shop back and explained the situation.  A customer service personage ended up calling the insurance company back for me and had a lengthy conversation with them.  I went back to the store today and he called them back and had yet another long conversation.  I felt so bad for how long he was on the phone.  He went above and beyond what he needed to do to help me – I’m so appreciative.  One of the many reasons Future Shop is one of my favourite stores!

Today’s symptoms:  I actually had a decent day today.  Had some severe MS pains in my forearms – some actually made me jump!  Other than that, had a decent day symptom-wise.  Yea!

Perfect Weekend

I had the most perfect weekend.  Mike and I were planning on participating in the 99’s BINGO run.  It’s something I’ve wanted to do for years.  The bad news was that it was on the same day (Saturday) as a Transport Canada Safety Seminar in Welland.  On a bright note, the weather pooped out Saturday so the BINGO run was moved to Sunday.  Mike and I drove out to Welland and joined about thirty other piloty folks for the seminar, which was presented by Transport Canada’s Brenda Frame.  I must say, it was the most enjoyable TC seminar I’ve ever been to.  Brenda made a topic that could have been very dry, quite enjoyable to listen too!  So glad we were able to go.  After the seminar, they did a draw for door prizes.  A few years ago when I went to a fly-in at the Welland Airport, one of the door prizes was a nice big case of aviation oil.  A friend of mine who is also on the executive of our Recreational Aircraft Association, said that the case of oil was HIS!  He was just so sure that they were going to draw his name.  I’ll never forget the look on his face when they drew mine instead!  Tee hee!  I’ve never seen such a cute pout before though.  I took off soon after him to fly back to St. Catharines.  As I was entering the circuit, I said over the radio “Sorry, I would have been here sooner but this case of oil is really weighing my plane down!”  We’ve been laughing about the incident for years – the whole RAA group knows about it.  Well, at the Transport Canada seminar this past weekend, there were three door prizes – half cases of oil.  I actually said to him that I wanted him to win (so he would quit pouting).  They called the first ticket – not one of ours.  The second one was his – yea!  I was happy for him.  Mind you, I was even happier for myself when my ticket was called third!  Tee hee!

What a great day!

Mike and I were both thrilled to see the weather was perfect on Sunday, which was the rain date for the BINGO run.  We took off from St. Catharines in Vyctor around 8:20.  Our first stop was Burlington to purchase our BINGO cards and draw balls for the “B” column.  You could purchase three additional balls at each airport, to increase your chances for winning – we decided to do so.  We had a nice, quick flight into Burlington:

Another plane from St. Catharines wasn’t far behind us.  It wasn’t a race – you just had to visit five of nine airports on the list in order to get your card stamped.  We all had to meet at the final airport, Lake Simcoe, by 2:30 for the draw.  We had tons of time.

We met up with a joint owner of the plane that came in after us, at the Burlington Airport.  We purchased our cards then headed back to Vyctor to head to airport #2, which was Brampton.  Here, we would get our “I” column stamped.

This airport was much more busy.

We were actually here last month for an RAA event we arranged.  Once we purchased our additional balls and got our cards stamped, we headed out to the plane.

Part way there, I mentioned that we had about four and a half hours before the draw in Lake Simcoe.  We decided to head back into the Brampton terminal and have breakfast to kill some time.  Kinda glad we did as I was getting a tad hungry.

After noms, we hit the skies again and flew to Oshawa (another airport we were at recently).  On the way there, we passed Canada’s Wonderland.  I haven’t been there in many years:

The Oshawa Airport was in our sights shortly after:

We chatted with the folks who were working the BINGO table.  The one woman mentioned how she owned a Pitts for over twenty years and participated in aerobatic competitions.  It’s something I’ve considered doing, but haven’t got up the courage.  She mentioned the one for this year is in Chatham.  I’m certainly going to look into it!

While we were in Oshawa, I decided to check my fuel.  I was shocked at how much I still had left – about 90 litres.  We did the conversion of gallons (as I knew my plane carried 26 gallons) and it worked out to 98 litres.  Hello!  We did not fly all that way with three take-offs, and only used 8 litres!  That was really weird, but rather comforting!  I knew I still had over half full tanks, but that was really surprising!  We decided we would fuel up during our next stop, which was Greenbank Airport – a grass strip.  I love landing on grass, so I was really looking forward to this one.  On the way there, we flew directly over Buttonville Airport, which will be closing soon (I really don’t get why.  I just found out this morning, they are opening an airport in Pickering because Toronto needs another one.  Hello – then leave Buttonville open!  Whatever):

We were able to spot the grass strip at Greenbank, and came in for a landing:

We couldn’t find a sign to get a pic, so Mike found the name of the airport on the gas pumps:

As I walked toward the BINGO table, a woman approached me and asked if I was Elizabeth.  She said she saw my picture in the COPA magazine, when I won an award the other year:

Kinda neat!  She introduced me to her husband and we stood and chatted for a bit.  I then asked if I could get fuel there and they said yes.  Problem – I’ve never had to pump my own fuel for my plane before.  Jeff was so nice and offered to show me how.  He said the pumps and credit card machines were comparable at most airports.  This was going to be a good lesson for me:

Success!  Thanks again, Jeff!

After giving Vyctor a drinky-poo, we headed to our final destination, the Lake Simcoe Airport.  The flight over Lake Simcoe was very picturesque:

I was really surprised to see this, and soon realized it was the Barrie Flea Market, which we used to go to when I was a kid:

And the airport was just up ahead:

The terminal building was very nice:

It lacked signage though:

We were a little early for the draw, so we decided to sit and have a coffee and butter tarts.

Of course, Donkay joined us on the trip.  You can see little Vyctor in the upper right corner:

They were a little behind with the draw, so we were worried that we would have to leave much later than expected to head home.  On a bright note, we won a few of the first twelve prizes, as we had quite a few numbers on our cards.  I was so excited that Mike won the air to air photography.  He said I could have it to get some sassy pictures of my plane.  I’m so excited – thanks again!  We also won $100 worth of personalized business cards and two Emergency Locator Transmitter recertification certificates (needs to be done once a year and costs about $80).  Yea!  The most we could win was four prizes, so there was no point in sticking around.  It was really nice to chat with the fellow pilots though, some of whom we met at previous airports.

It was a nice clear flight back to St. Catharines.  Here we are heading by Toronto:

Within about an hour and fifteen minutes, we were home:

It was an absolutely perfect weekend!  I still can’t believe how well I did energy-wise.  We left at 8:20 and got back to St. Catharines after 5:00 – total of six airports.  Wow!

Today’s symptoms:  Needless to say, I’ve been very pooped the last couple of days, after my busy weekend.  Worth every second though.  Today was a bit worse than yesterday – had a really bad headache (although I think is mostly sinus related) and tons of MS aches and pains all over, including the dreaded MS hug.  Tomorrow will be better!

Poopy Weather

We are having another awful weather week.  I guess we really can’t complain though considering what Toronto just went through.  The rain was so unrelenting yesterday that major highways and the transit system totally flooded.  People were stuck on the subways and street cars for hours, waiting to be rescued.  Ugh!  Nothing like that here, just hot, muggy and showery conditions.  I think we’re supposed to get another day of rain tomorrow then it’s supposed to be nice for the next few and into the weekend.

Last weekend Mike and I went to the classic car display in downtown St. Catharines.  They closed some of the streets off for the event:

Kinda weird that there were also non-classic cars like this one, but still neat to see:

We went into The British Boutique on St. Paul Street.  This is where I mistakenly thought that my little mother would be thrilled with a Coronation Street gnome for Mother’s Day.

This is when I found out Jan is anti-gnome.  She’s a gnomist!  Needless to say, I had to return it to the store.  Thought I would take a picture of the little fella to show her what she missed out on.  What else she missed out on were the amazing free cuppy-cakes they were giving out that day:

Speaking of gnomes, I picked up a box of her vitamins the other day.  I decided to select the box that had the free gnome:

Ok, she didn’t quite buy it.  Poor little guy probably got tossed after I left her house.  *** sniff, whimper ***

Not too much going on right now.  Hoping to actually crawl into bed before 11:00 tonight so I can relax with a book.  Got out of reading for months now – I seem to go through reading phases.

Today’s symptoms:  Quite fatigued today.  I’m still having pretty brutal headaches, but I think they’re mostly from my jaw issues.  On a bright note, it is slowly getting better (day by day).  Right on!

Family BBQ Fly In

Mike and I flew into Tottenham Air Field on Sunday (north of Toronto).  His aunt lives in Beeton, and we were invited to their BBQ.  The weather was iffy in the morning but thankfully cleared up by the time we left soon after noon.  The drive would have been almost two hours, but we made it there in about 45 minutes.  A few jets flew over us as we passed by Pearson Airport:

The traffic on the highway heading toward Niagara was pretty bad:

Glad we weren’t in it!

It was a little hard to find the small grass runway at Tottenham, but we found it without having to circle around.  We did a pass by the runway to check out the conditions.  Looked good!

The landing went great, on the uphill grass strip:

I posed next to Vyctor while waiting for Mike’s uncle to get us (about a fifteen minute drive):

I was taking a pic of Mike, when he shrieked “Hark, a plane over yonder!” (or something like that….

Incoming:

Once we got to his aunt and uncle’s home, we noticed the little tent in the back yard.  We figured my mother was invited, but apparently it was for Mike’s little nephews:

Mike and I assembled a few small airplanes we got the kids while we were at Sun N Fun a few months ago.  I was given the honour of sending one on a test flight.  Errrrr…..I swear I fly real planes much better:

At least it’s now good at flying around corners!

We had a really great time.  I met a bunch more family members, which was really nice.  We played a bit of badminton, ran around with the kids and chatted with everyone.  Around 5:30, noms were served and everything was amazing:

Mike and I decided to leave just before 7:00, as we wanted to do a little aerobatic air show for everyone (there was a large field and another grass strip right across from their house, so no issues there!).  Just before we left, the youngest nephew was brought inside by his father.  Apparently grandma gave him the container of chocolate sauce I brought with the fruit tray, and she turned away from him for a little too long:

Tee hee!  Bath time!!!

Mike’s dad drove us back to the airport, we climbed in Vyctor and took off.  It was only a couple minutes to fly over to the house, where we did the air show.  It was neat to see everyone waving at us.  We received texts that they really enjoyed it.  After that, it was the flight back to St. Catharines.  What a perfect day!

Received an amusing picture in an email today.  It was a pic of me at the MS volunteer appreciation banquet, where I was surprisingly awarded the Volunteer of the Year award.  This is the pic right after they called my name – yes, I was a tad shocked:

Today’s symptoms:  Had a really bad day pain-wise.  I actually had to go home just before 1:00.  I’m still dealing with horrific jaw pain, which has also caused an equally bad headache.  Lots of MS aches and pains too, plus my balance was pretty bad.  While walking home, I probably looked like I was drunk!  Oh well, tomorrow I’ve decided to feel much better.

Insane Coincidence

Something really crazy happened yesterday.  I’m seeing a specialist here in Niagara and he will be performing a surgery on me (hopefully soon).  There is another specialist in Niagara (completely different field) with the same name.  A hospital called me yesterday and left a message on my voicemail, stating the name of my surgery and that I would be having my pre-op appointment on July 2, with the surgery on the 16th.  Wow, that was quick!  She said what wing of the hospital it was in.  I was surprised it was in Hamilton, but I knew my doctor was having a hard time getting time in the operating room at the new St. Catharines hospital, so figured he found Hamilton to be more accommodating.  I phoned the booking nurse back and verified the dates and times.  I was about to hang up and then decided to mention the wing at the hospital.  She said it was the same place where I had the consultation with my doctor.  Huh?  I said I’ve never had an appointment there and she asked if I just saw him at his Niagara office.  I said yes.  She said my doctor referred me to another doctor for the actual surgery.  This totally threw me.  I asked why it was in Hamilton and she said it was due to my heart arrythmia.  Huh???  I said I didn’t know I had that issue.  She said my doctor discussed it with me during our last appointment – last Friday.  I said I hadn’t seen him in about a month.  She said “What?”  I also said “What??”  She said she was going to look into things and call me back.  It was soon after I hung up that I clued in.  A woman with the same name as me, was having surgery with the same name as the one I’m going to have, but in a totally different part of the body, her specialist has the same name as mine and we live in the same city!  Holy cow!  Seriously, what are the odds of that?  If I didn’t ask the booking nurse about the wing at the hospital, I would have showed up for my pre-op appointment next week.  Now I can see why there are issues with people getting wrongly diagnosed or even having the wrong surgery.  Glad we got it resolved though.

Had a great day at work.  I’m really enjoying my new position.  Also, we had a great lunch n learn session with two detectives from the Niagara Regional Police.  I’m so glad I attended.

Back at home, the girls greeted me briefly then decided to chill.

Mya and Pinky:

Boo:

And as usual, Abby is too googly to actually “chill”:

I have tomorrow off (compressed).  I’m supposed to take someone up for a flight and aerobatics.  Not sure if the weather is going to work for us.  Paws crossed!

Today’s symptoms: Felt really yucky today.  I slept in almost an extra hour because I was just feeling so bad.  I didn’t want to take too much time off though with starting the new position.  Tons of MS aches and pains today plus a killer headache.

Decent Weekend

As I mentioned in my previous blog, I was asked to be a guest speaker at the Women in Aviation conference in Mississauga this weekend.  I was really looking forward to it.  I heard they always have a great turn out.  Mike and I arrived just after 1:00.  I presented at 3:00.  Neither of us likes to run at the last minute, which is quite nice!  We listened to the last part of one presentation, then stayed for another one.  We were in a large room upstairs in the hotel.  At 2:45, Mike and I were led downstairs to the room where I would give my talk.  I’m not sure if it was the fact that I was presenting concurrently with another presenter, it was the last presentation of the day or people just weren’t interested.  Only about ten people came to my session.  Needless to say, the turn out was quite disappointing.  On a bright note, the folks who attended seemed very interested during the whole presentation.  They were very attentive and I received quite a few laughs.  Go figure, I was silly at points.  Most came up to speak with me and/or take one of my cards at the end of the talk, which was really nice.  I’m glad I was able to present, despite the small crowd.

The weather has been fairly poopy this week.  I have an aerobatic flight booked with someone on Thursday, but they’re calling for thunderstorms.  Guess we’ll wait and see!

I got one of those neat Cat’s Meow toys, as seen on TV.  My four little freaks love it!!!

Speaking of freaks, Mike just sent me a pic of one of his cats:

I love little cross-eyed Sammy!

I started a new position at work this week and so far I totally love it.  I think I really needed this – needed a change.  I’m actually really looking forward to going to work each day again!

Not too much else to report right now.  Stay tuned!

Today’s symptoms:  Felt really yucky today as I had my Tysabri infusion yesterday.  The administration went much better this month with only two IV pokes rather than the four (plus three more for blood work) last month.  Ugh!!!  Here’s a pic after poke seven:

During the third IV, the needle came out of the vein and the fluid pooled under my skin, thus the warm pack on my right arm.
The symptoms I experience after the infusion get better day by day and usually only last for about four days total.

Big Day Tomorrow

I had a short day at work (compressed) which was quite convenient since I had a flight this afternoon.  It was our annual golf tournament for work, which I typically fly over and take aerial shots.  I left work at 11:30 and headed to the airport.  Perfect day for it weather-wise.The Electra was landing before I took off:

It took me less than ten minutes to fly there.  I didn’t get the greatest shots, but I tried:

I was able to see a few coworkers waving at me, so of course, I dipped my wings in return.

Back at the airport, I passed this beauty:

Nice flight.  I had an equally nice flight on Wednesday.  I flew Mike and I into a monthly fly-in event at a local private strip:

It was a great turn out both plane-wise and people-wise:

We had a really nice time with good conversation and good noms.  The owner walked me out to my plane and I told him I was going to leave and try not to do any aerobatics.  His response was “Why?”  Enough said.  Did a few maneuvers over the field followed by a low and over.  Total blast!

Two small items to mention:  There were a few fireworks just outside my apartment last night:

And two: Mya was really cute while I was laying on the couch today:

I have an exciting day tomorrow.  Mike and I are going to Mississauga where I will be giving a presentation at the Women in Aviation conference.  I’m really looking forward to it.  I’ve given this presentation about six or seven times now.  The last time was for the Air Cadets in Port Colborne.  I hope I get at least a few people attending my presentation!

Today’s symptoms:  Not long after my flight, my headache hit pretty hard again.  Still not sure how much of it is caused my my sinus infection and how much is MS related.  The fatigue has really kicked in now too.

Quite a Surprise

Mike and I went to the MS Society volunteer appreciation night on Thursday.  I went a couple years ago as well.  A couple of friends from work who also have volunteered for different MS events also attended.  We had a great meal of roast chicken and various salads, followed by some really great cake.  I was totally shocked with what happened next.  They mentioned the volunteer of the year award.  The MC mentioned how this person has raised over $15,000 over the last few years through the Walks for MS, attends all three walks each year (Kinda wondering how they did that since they are all over Niagara and start at the same time), they volunteer for the golf tournament, then she mentioned “she recently won the Queen Elizabeth Diamond Jubilee medal.”  Ok, now I’m starting to get just a tad freaked out.  I fly over all three walks every year plus do a little air show for the golf tourney.  I couldn’t believe it when she mentioned my name.  I had no clue at all that I was receiving the award.  As I walked up to the stage, still in shock, I turned to the crowd and said “If I knew I was getting this, I would have dressed a little nicer!”

I gave a quick off the cuff speech and returned to the table.  My friends were so awesome and happy for me.

What a nice evening!

Saturday was another great day.  I flew Mike and I to Lindsay (North East of Toronto) for a fly-in AND to buy their amazing butter tarts.  Just after we took off, we got a request from one of the folks in the control tower to kindly bring her a butter tart.  Clearly this airport is known for this awesome treat.  We also planned on bringing some back for friends and family.  Sure hope they’d have enough.

It was a nice flight there.  We passed a few planes on the way, including a few taking off from Toronto Island:

We were told by the tower to climb from 2000 to 2500 feet in order to allow another plane to pass below us:

Soon after, he said we could go back down to 2000 feet, then passed us off to the Buttonville tower.  She then told us to climb to 2500 feet.  Roller coaster!  Mind you, since Mike likes to do funky maneuvers (including aerobatics), I made the climb and descent quite enjoyable!

Within an hour, we were almost at Lindsay Airport.  We followed another plane in until we got to the circuit:

Then we arrived:

The guy taking off in the shot made me a little nervous.  I called I was on final, then he said he was going to take position on the runway to take off.  Hello!  I was pretty sure I was going to have to do a go-around.  He took off in time though.

We parked Vyctor in line with the other cute planes:

Our mission – acquire the buttertarts!  On the way to the restaurant, we passed the Harvard that had flights for sale:

And a Tiger Moth:

We registered, then I ran back to Vyctor to put this lovely sign on his propeller:

In the restaurant, I asked if there was a limit to how many butter tarts we could buy.  She said no.  I asked for two dozen.  She loaded up the containers and there were only two left in the display case.  Mike and I thought they looked kinda sad in there so we bought them too.  Yum!!!

We sat and ate ours.  Donkay had some too:

I must admit, they are the best butter tarts I’ve ever had.  The woman in the restaurant said people fly in from all over (even Pennsylvania) to get their tarts.

After eating, we walked around and looked at some of the classic cars on display:

We met up with a member from our Recreational Aircraft Association group.  He was there with a brother, who built a couple airplanes.

After touring around, we headed back to Vyctor to leave:

Taxiing out:

Heading back through Toronto, Mike shrieked with glee as we flew over our favourite store:

It was pretty cool to see the Edge Walkers up on the CN Tower:

I did the Edge Walk last year:

It was fun, just wish I had got a rush.

Anyway, it was a nice flight back to St. Catharines:

Perfect day!

Today was a bit of a different story.  I’ve been dealing with a sinus infection for a few weeks now.  My GP gave me meds for it on Friday.  It was more than tolerable (pain-wise) on Saturday.  However, I’m not sure if it was the change of pressure or what, but the pain was horrific today.  I was supposed to go to Mike’s place for a Father’s Day lunch, but I wasn’t able to go.  I’ve been vegging all day, with the curtains closed and the volume on the TV low.  I’m sure it will be at least a bit better tomorrow though.

Today’s symptoms:  My fatigue level wasn’t the greatest and I had quite a few MS aches and pains in my forearms.  The sinus headache was severe – really hoping I can sleep tonight.

Camping at The Pinery

Mike and I had an awesome weekend – it was our camping trip at the Pinery Provincial Park.  We left the apartment just after 8:00 on Friday morning.  It was a nice three hour drive to the park.  As soon as we got there, we set up his parent’s massive tent:

Notice the huge-o air mattress – very comfy!

The weather forecast wasn’t too promising, so we took advantage of every dry moment.  Our first stop was a walk to the lake:

When we got back to the site, we pulled out our ball gloves and played some catch.  We didn’t play in the clearest area, so it wasn’t really a huge surprise when I tossed the ball into a tree and it stuck.  No way I was going to leave it there:

Just as I climbed back down, the rain started.  We ran back to the tent for some munchies and a few rounds of UNO!  Due to the rain, we weren’t able to use the stove or start a campfire.  This was my first dinner of the camping trip:

We went to the Schoolhouse Restaurant in Grand Bend.  Very good!

The next day, we played catch, frisbee and badminton.  Then we went for an almost two hour nature walk.  We passed this cute smiling tree stump:

We also stopped at an observation deck and that’s where I met Frank.  He was a cute little dude.  Here he is getting a butt rub:

Continuing on with our walk, we ended up at the visitor centre.  There were a few turtles in tanks.  This fella was having some noms:

It started raining again that afternoon so we weren’t able to cook dinner again.  Oh darn, back to the Schoolhouse!

Mike had the above BBQ sloppy-joe and I had the same thing as the night before.  Great food!

It was really sad to have to leave on Sunday.  We started taking down the tent soon after we got up in the morning.  Perfect timing – it started pouring as we got the last item in the car.  We were going to stay at the site until checkout time at 2:00, but that wasn’t going to happen with the rainage.  Back home we went.  We passed this truck on the way and I thought of my little mother:

Kinda sad to have to go into work today.  Really wish we were still camping.  The best part of being home though is seeing my kittahs.  Boo and Mya greeted me when I got home today:

Today’s symptoms: Quite tired but to be expected.  I still can’t believe how great my energy level was during the camping trip!

First Fly-In

I had my first fly-in of the season this weekend.  I flew Mike and I to the Sexsmith Airport in Exeter on Sunday.  The weather was absolutely perfect for the hour and fifteen minute flight to the west:
It took me some serious studying to try and find the grass strip airport, but I spotted it when I was about five miles away.  There were already dozens of planes there:

I LOVE landing on grass:

I was at this airport last year to give a “motivational” type presentation.  I was really looking forward to seeing Tom from COPA 177 again.  We’ve kept in touch over email since then.  Look who was there to flag us to our parking spot – Tom!

We had to park way at the end of the other runway, which was kinda cool as we got to check out all of the other planes there:

I was shocked that I was the only one with a rubber chicken hanging off my pitot static tube.  Weird!

I ran into quite a few folks I met when I was there giving the presentation.  It was nice to be recognized!  Mike and I grabbed some yummy breakfast while chatting with the fellow pilots.  Quite good!  I was hoping some other folks from our Recreational Aircraft Association would have flown in as well, but we didn’t see anyone.

After nomming, we wandered around and checked out some of the other planes:

Some folks were still coming in:

I got a couple pics with Tom, who gave me a little trivia – Exeter, Ontario is known for their white squirrels!

He assured me they were not albinos!

After saying farewell, Mike and I headed back to Vyctor.  As we taxied over to the runway, we waved farewell to Sexsmith:

We are going camping at the Pinery Provincial Park later this week, which ironically was less than a 10 minute flight away from Sexsmith.  We decided to fly over and check it out:

Kinda neat to see it from the air, knowing we would be going there a few days later.

It was a nice flight back to St. Catharines – still very clear.  Here we are, coming in to land:

Amazing day!  What a great way to start off the fly-in season!  There are many more to look forward to over the next few months.

Today’s symptoms: Felt pretty good today except for a fairly bad headache and some bad aches and pains in my arms, plus the dreaded MS hug.  Ugh!

Awesome Weekend

As you may recall from my previous blog, someone said goodbye to me over the radio while I was leaving Hamilton Airspace.  He said I would find out who it was at work the next day.  Well, I had to go up front to see a taxpayer and when I came back to my desk, I saw this note:

Ah, the plot thickens!  It turns out it was a fellow pilot who works upstairs – she was on a flight with a friend (flight instructor and examiner) and he was doing the radio work while she flew.  She recognized my voice so he decided to play with my mind a tad.  Well done!  I would have never guessed!  Just so glad she was kind enough to end the mystery!

Had a great day on Saturday.  Mike and I went over to Buffalo to go to the Eastern Hills Mall.  We also had to pick up a package I ordered.  Before heading over, we decided to get breakkie at IHOP.  Donkey joined us:

Mike ordered these awesome red velvet pancakes:

Then we headed to the States.  The wait on the three main bridges was 1-2 hours.  Thank goodness for Nexus!  I think we had to wait about five minutes!

We visited a pet store while there and saw a pet for sale that I’ve never seen before (at least as a pet!)  Little prairie dogs:

We hit a liquidation store once back in Canada.  I saw this sign and instantly thought of my little mother:

Had another great day on Sunday.  I went over to Mike’s for dinner.  As usual, little Coco stared at me:

Here’s my view:

He’s so cute – all four of his kittahs are adorable.  Here’s little Blue trying to help himself to one of Mike’s ribs:

After dinner (which was awesome!), we headed back to my place, killed some time then out to the airport.  He’s never flown over fireworks before so I figured I’d give him the experience.  We took off just before 9:00pm and headed toward Welland.  There were tons of little private shows all over the place, but we wanted the big one.  We circled for over ten minutes and no big show.  We decided to head back to Port Dalhousie.  A few minutes after we got there, the fireworks in Welland started.  Ugh!  There wasn’t a big show in Port D, but still lots of smaller shows to keep us entertained.  Once back on the ground, we tied down little Vyctor for the night:

He’s happily back in the hangar now, and will probably stay there until the weekend.  I’m hoping to fly to Sexsmith Airport Sunday morning for a fly-in breakfast.  That is where I did a motivational talk/presentation for COPA Flight 177 last year.

Today’s symptoms:  I felt fairly decent now that I’m sleeping well.  Unfortunately this morning, I took a pill that I forgot I was only supposed to take at night.  I soon found out why – I was soooooo drowsy.  I can’t believe I made it through the whole day.  Oops!  Still experiencing a pretty bad headache and MS aches and pains in my forearms.

Great Day Off

It was my compressed day off today and the weather was perfect, so I’m sure you know what I did.  My little mother hasn’t flown with me since before Christmas.  We flew out to Brantford this morning for breakfast.  Unfortunately, it wasn’t the smoothest flight there, so Jan was a tad stressed.  At least breakkie made her feel a bit better:

The two cups of coffee helped too.  Plus we got to look at cute little Vyctor just outside:

Also got to see these beauties that were taking kids with vision and/or hearing issues to Ottawa:

Another one landed just as we left, and there was one more on the way.

Had such a neat experience in the bathroom at the airport, of all places!  Jan and I were just about to leave when a woman walked in and said “It is you!”  She said that she follows my blog religiously.  I was so flattered, I didn’t even ask her where she was from.  Duh!  I’m horrible with names, but I think she said Tracy.  If you’re reading this, I would love to hear from you!  Feel free to email me at murphage@sympatico.ca !

Had another interesting experience on the flight home.  I was just clearing the Hamilton control zone and I’m not sure if it was someone in the Tower or another pilot, but he said “Bye Elizabeth!”  What the heck???  After a brief pause, I asked who had said that.  He said that I would find out at the office tomorrow.  I’m so confused!  I have no clue who it was.  Kinda looking forward to finding out on Friday!

When we landed, we saw this cute coyote on the edge of the runway:

We went back to my place and Jan waxed the floor in my dining room – She’s awesome!  I made a pretty big batch of beef jerky.  It smells SO good in my apartment.  It’s been going for about four hours now.  Should be at least another three or so:

Today’s symptoms: Feeling pretty good.  Still dealing with a fairly bad headache, but more than tolerable.  My hands were a bit more shaky than normal.

Flight to Oshawa

Had an amazing weekend.  Mike and I were watching the weather all day, hoping the clouds would lift enough for us to fly to Oshawa to go to the Mandarin.  Fortunately, by 3:00 the clouds lifted up to about 2000′ and we were able to go.  We took off just after 3:00, as the restaurant didn’t open back up until 4:00.  It was an awesome hour long flight there.  We passed over the heart of Toronto:

Then headed Northish to Oshawa:

I was third to land – this was my first time at this airport.

We wandered over to the Madarin which was about a five minute walk.

Since it was Mother’s Day weekend, it was totally packed.  Still, we had some awesome noms:

Mike went all out on the yummy desserts:

Ironically, all of the women were given a carnation for Mother’s Day.  It had the MS logo on it as the Mandarin is the major sponsor of the Walk for MS.

Heading back to St. Catharines, the weather wasn’t as good.  The haze really rolled in:

We saw a neat boat in one of the harbours:

And saw the Orng medical helicopter and some other aircraft:

The haze and cloudage was pretty bad back in St. Catharines:

What an awesome day!

Had another great day on Sunday.  As it was Mother’s Day, Jan and I spent the day together.  We did some shopping at first, hitting Petcetera for their spend $100 and get $30 off deal.  Ended up getting 90 lbs of cat litter!  Then we went to Shoppers Drug Mart for our third $200 shopping spree – spend your points event.  We picked up $227 worth of stuff and it only cost me $27.  I have enough points for one more spree.

Back home, we heated up our yummy full turkey dinners I picked up at Antipastos.  We had them at Christmas too – very good.  So good, Mya wanted some too:

We had such a great day – what an awesome weekend!

Today’s symptoms: Very tired and drained today with a pretty bad headache.  Tons of MS aches and pains all over too.  Went home an hour early.

Krazy Kittahs

Not too much to report for this week.  I’m really hoping the weather is decent tomorrow as I’m going to fly Mike and I to Oshawa.  There is a Mandarin restaurant across the road from the airport.

This is going to be a short but very cute blog.  My kittahs are adorable.

Boo and Mya on the couch:

Abby being cute:

Boo had breakfast in bed:

I changed my shower curtain today and Pinky crawled into the the one to be washed:

Then she stuck her tongue out at me:

Little goobers.

Today’s symptoms: Feeling pretty decent.  Bad headache though.  Finally slept the last couple of nights.  I hope this is the end of my month long stint of insomnia.

Plenty O’ Flying

I was able to go for three flights over the last few days.  I had Thursday off and someone I met in Waterloo flew to St. Catharines to do some aerobatics with me.  The weather was great – our previous flight was cancelled due to rain.  She came in a rental Katana from the Waterloo Flight Centre:

We went up and did loops, rolls, snap rolls and combos.  She loved it!  Nothing like having a totally happy passenger!

She texted me after she flew back to Waterloo and said that flight was quite boring and uneventful compared to our aerobatic one.

Had another perfect weather day on Saturday.  Mike and I flew out to the Brampton Airport for a tour of the Fisher Flying Products hangar.  They produce construction kits for folks to purchase and build one of their fourteen different types of homebuilt aircraft.  I set up the tour for our Recreational Aircraft Association group to attend.  We had three planes fly in plus a few cars.  In total, there were seventeen of us there.

Here we are listening to Paul speak about his awesome company:

Then outside to one of their demo planes, the Dakota Hawk:

Here’s a shot of the three of us who flew in:

We also spoke with the owner of Kitplane Builders (completion services) who is in the same hangar as Fisher Flying Products.  After that, we went over to the WW1 museum to check out the awesome planes:

I was starting to feel a little yucky, so we decided to head back.

Burlington Airpark:

And the Burlington Skyway:

And coming in to land back at St. Catharines:

Awesome day!  And had another one today.  It was the Walk for MS this morning.  Yet again, the weather was perfect.  I took off around 8:45 to do some aerobatics over the lake just north of the starting point of the St. Catharines Walk.  Once it started, I snapped some pics of the walkers before heading over to the other Walk sites:

Then over to the Walks in Welland and Niagara Falls:

I’m so happy they finally had great weather for the Walk.  It’s usually in April and almost always windy and rainy.

Just a note to thank everyone again who supported me for this cause!

Today’s symptoms:  Felt quite good all morning escept for a slight headache.  By the afternoon, I could tell a sinus infection was a’brewing – bad headache, pressure, fatigue.  Blah.
